If you committed a terrible atrocity and attempted to go back in time, you would only prevent it in an alternate timeline but not the one you committed said atrocity in. that's from my own limited understanding of quantum physics and time travel anyway.

IT WOULDN'T WORK BECAUSE IF YOU PREVENTED YOURSELF FRO DOING THE BAD THING THERE WOULD BE NO NEED TO HAVE GONE BACK IN TIME AND YOUR FUTURE SELF WOULD NOT EXIST SO EITHER YOUR MISSION FAILS OR IT NEVER HAPPENS AT ALL
